The Aftermath (2019) - how war changes people's lives and situations

Updated: Mar 14, 2020

What sort of film ? A serious feature drama, in parts political and personal.

Theme: The film examines the aftermath of WW2 and in particular how its consequences worked through the lives of people, both at a societal and a personal level.

Plot: It is 1946 and the British Army is in north-west Germany, to support work in restoring the nation after WW2. Hamburg has been bombed heavily and people are living in the streets and camps on little food, on the verge of rioting. Adherents of the Third Reich are committing terrorist acts.

A British Army officer and his wife (played by Keira Knightley) arrive, moving into the large home of a German family, whom they allow to remain upstairs. Both families have suffered loss in the war. The war continues to have consequences for each person in the families and among their acquaintances.

Comment: A very good, sound drama. Good performances all round. Great evocation of the times and (for me, at least) quite an eye-opener about the difficulty of restoring order after WW2.

Particularly good at recording how relationships gradually change due to circumstances, for better or worse.

Historical background: After WW2, Germany was divided into four geographical areas, with the British, French, American and Russian armies each occupying one area. The Russian area later become East Germany; and the other three areas West Germany. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allied-occupied_Germany

Verdict: 4/5
