What's it like: A full-blooded, exciting, energetic portrayal of two rival motor racing champions.

What's it about: The rivalry between Englishman James Hunt and Austrian Niki Lauda in the 1976 Formula One championship. They were equally matched, but completely different in personality: Hunt was a swashbuckling, reckless gambler who drove with adrenaline and excitement; Lauda was a careful, clever driver, who drove with intelligence and determination. Of course, neither were that simple: Hunt was capable of a lot humanity, and Lauda was much more competitive than his steady demeanour would suggest.

It was a very exciting season, as the two drivers were so well matched. There were also major ups and downs in the story. The way events turned out brought their differing personalities and their rivalry to the fore, but it also deepened their friendship.

The public was fascinated by the duel which took place on a world stage, and it is said to have helped elevate Formula One racing to a higher level as a spectator sport.

Who's who: Chris Hemsworth as James Hunt (he also plays Thor in Marvel films), Daniel Bruhl as Niki Lauda. Director is Ron Howard (also Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, Frost/Nixon).

Historicity: Probably close to the truth. There is a one-hour BBC documentary about Hunt-Lauda in 1976 which covers the same ground. They tell the same story, but the film is more exciting to watch.

However, in real life, Hunt and Lauda's relationship was more intense than the film depicts - the friendship was stronger and the rivalry sharper. It's a bit surprising the film decides to be more mellow, but films often downplay intensity for a mainstream audience. That said, the film still feels very full of life and energy.

Interesting fact: In their careers, Lauda won three world championships, Hunt won one. This is in line with their personalities, as the film comments at one point: Lauda was steady, Hunt was spontaneous.

Verdict: 5/5
